Lake Hart and Lake Mary Jane Advisory Board

Written By Suzanne Arnold, Concerned Citizen

Opportunity for a Lake Advisory Board for Lake Hart / Lake Mary Jane

All Lake Hart & Lake Mary Jane lakefront property owners and have the chance to create a Lake Board to improve and conserve the quality of our lakes.  The cost will only be $75 per year per lakefront parcel – and all the money is put into a fund that can ONLY be used for lake improvement projects and ONLY for Lake Hart & Lake Mary Jane.   The money will be used for things such as educational newsletters to help lakefront owners understand how to better care for their lakefront and the land adjacent to it, better weed control, small restoration projects, and better stormwater management.

How did this come about?  Last spring Orange County Utilities started plans to "skim" millions of gallons of water each day from Lake Hart & Lake Mary Jane.  South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) would not agree to this since the water is needed for the restoration of the Everglades.  Orange County decided to sue SFWMD over this matter even though our District 4 Commissioner Linda Stewart was strongly opposed lake skimming.  Thanks to citizens across the county that spoke out against this - the county backed down from the suit but has asked SFWMD to look into alternative water sources for the county.  SFWMD is holding monthly meetings as they create their official rules for water levels that are needed for the restoration.  (So far - everything looks very good to keep the current seasonal levels as they are for our two lakes.) But homeowners on these lakes had no official say in the matter.

Burnham scientist visiting Orlando says diabetes research shows hope

Diabetes usually doesn't travel alone. It can bring blindness, amputations, heart disease and other life-altering complications.

Current treatments help patients regulate the condition, but they still suffer from tremendous fluctuations in their sugar levels throughout the day, said diabetes researcher Pamela Itkin-Ansari with the Burnham Institute.

Speaking Wednesday to a small luncheon gathering, she said the extreme highs and lows contribute to organ damage that can trigger the potentially deadly side effects.

Osceola District Uniform Policy
The Osceola County School Board may implement a uniform policy for all elementary, middle, and high school students for the 2008-2009 school year.
Under consideration is a proposal to adopt the following as mandatory
uniforms:
--Navy or khaki twill-type, corduroy, or denim fabric bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts, jumpers)
--White or navy shirts/blouses with collars without a brand logo (polo-style knit shirts or woven shirts)
--Schools would also have the option of adding another shirt color to reflect their school colors, and schools could include school T-shirts as part of the uniform.
Parents and community members interested in sharing their opinion on the issue with the Osceola County School Board are encouraged to attend the Public Hearing scheduled for April 15, 2008, at 7:00 PM in the Administrative Center Board Room, located at 817 Bill Beck Blvd., Kissimmee.

Individuals wishing to address the School Board at either meeting are asked to complete one of the request forms located just outside the Board Room in the lobby and to give it to Superintendent Muse or Chairman John McKay that night prior to the start of the meeting.

Parents and community residents may also offer their opinions to the School Board electronically by clicking here or by calling 407-870-1234 to leave a recorded message.

Zoning for new Narcoossee High School

The construction on our new High School on Narcoossee Rd is coming along as planned and will open in the fall of 2009.  The school board is holding a community meeting to address rezoning for the new High School.  The residents out here have worked so hard for many years to get a high school in this area - so we want to attend and show them that our residents are ready to support this school!  At this time there are no issues to address at this meeting - but we want strong attendance to make sure no items slip by us - or that any new concerns are addressed.

The meeting is on

Wednesday, February 13th at 6:30

at the Educational Leadership Center

at 445 W Amelia Street in downtown

If anyone wants to carpool, residents are meeting at northshore rec center at 5:30.  Please email Julie Hutchingson at Juliehutch@bellsouth.net  so she can make sure they have enough drivers!

Help for Preparing Your Child for the FCAT

By Johnny Duncan

When Dan Blanton and his wife Kim became concerned that their son, a third-grader, was struggling with reading, they turned to his teacher at Stone Lakes Elementary School, Jennifer Wojcik, who shared some valuable information that would help the Blanton’s child learn to read better.

After that initial meeting, the Blantons learned that Wojcik’s credentials and her approach to getting her students ready for the FCAT were extraordinary. As owners of a multimedia development and CD/DVD duplication company, the Blantons saw an opportunity to take Wojcik’s knowledge and approach to teaching, and help other parents. They found there was a gap in getting students ready for the FCAT and they determined the biggest challenge is getting educators, parents and students on the same page.

Nemours returns to Lake Nona fold

The Nemours Foundation, which last month shifted the site of its planned children's hospital from Lake Nona to a nearby property on Boggy Creek Road, has doubled back to Plan A.

Friday, it announced it had signed an agreement to buy 60 acres from Lake Nona's developer, Tavistock Group, putting its children's hospital back in the southeast Orlando "medical city" that eventually will include the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine, the Burnham Institute for Medical Research and a VA hospital.

'Medical city' to move off drawing board

There will be plenty of talk in 2008 when it comes to Lake Nona's "medical city," though the major talking points won't start opening for business until 2009.

Construction has already begun on the University of Central Florida's College of Medicine and its Burnett College of Biomedical Sciences, as well as the Burnham Institute for Medical Research -- three of the top tenants for what is envisioned as the future hub for a burgeoning biomedical cluster in Central Florida.

All three facilities are scheduled to open in the latter half of 2009. UCF hopes to eventually add a school of nursing at the site in southeastern Orlando, though that would be years down the road.

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando to move its research institute to Lake Nona

Lake Nona's burgeoning "medical city" landed another plum Wednesday, with the announcement that M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando will move its Cancer Research Institute there to work with the University of Central Florida.

It was welcome news for Lake Nona, which earlier this month learned that one of its expected tenants, the Nemours Foundation, signed a contract on property for its proposed children's hospital nearly 2 miles away.

But the Lake Nona complex -- anchored by the UCF medical school and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, both of which have broken ground -- rebounded with two announcements this week
